City Update - 15 July 2026
The City of Weed is pleased to provide the following updates regarding recent City Council actions, ongoing projects, library activities, and expanded public outreach.
Local Tax Measure Placed on November Ballot
The City Council voted 5-0 to place a proposed 1.5% local transactions and use tax measure before Weed voters at the November 3, 2026, General Municipal Election.
City staff is currently completing the required paperwork and coordinating with the Siskiyou County Elections Department to place the measure on the ballot.
As a public agency, the City will ONLY provide factual and impartial information and will not advocate for or against the measure. Residents interested in learning more about the City’s finances, budget process, service demands, and infrastructure needs may visit the City’s Budget Outlook webpage. The page includes financial information, supporting materials, and a video from one of the City’s public presentations.
Mill Fire Storm Drainage Project Approved
The City Council approved Resolution No. 31-2026, awarding the Mill Fire Storm Drainage Infrastructure Replacement Project to Tullis, Inc. for $1,113,269.
Following a competitive bidding process and review by PACE Engineering, Tullis was determined to be the lowest responsive and responsible bidder. This project will advance the City’s ongoing Mill Fire recovery efforts by replacing critical storm drainage infrastructure and strengthening the community’s long-term resilience.
Weed Library Programs and Community Outreach
During June, the Weed Library recorded:
- 1,004 total checkouts, including 298 children’s books
- 11 new library cards
- More than 6,400 minutes of public computer use
- 17 volunteer hours
- Nearly $100 in community donations
The library hosted a Fire Wise Community Workshop covering evacuation procedures, home hardening, wildfire alerts, insurance regulations, and community preparedness. Staff also participated in the Juneteenth Celebration at Charlie Byrd Park, where they distributed children’s books, assisted residents with library cards, and collected stories about Lincoln Heights for the library’s local history collection.
The Summer Reading Program is underway, with approximately 20 children registered, and the library is hosting Weed Elementary summer school students each Wednesday for comic book-themed “Superhero Training” activities.
Public Wi-Fi hours have also been adjusted to 8:00 a.m. through 10:00 p.m. to reduce overnight activity in the library parking lot.
City-Owned Downtown Properties
The City Council approved Resolution No. 34-2026, determining that four City-owned downtown properties are not needed for current or foreseeable municipal operations and qualify as exempt surplus land under California law:
- 219 Main Street
- 247 Main Street
- 259 Main Street
- 234 Clay Street
The City will submit the required resolution and supporting documentation to the California Department of Housing and Community Development. This action does not approve the sale or transfer of the properties. Any future disposition will require additional action by the City.
Anyone who does not have an existing City-approved agreement authorizing use of these properties may no longer use them for parking, storage, access, business operations, or any other private purpose. Anyone who believes they have an existing agreement, or authorization should contact City Hall to verify its terms.
Main Street Cleanup Project RFP Update
The City has received requests for legal clarification concerning the latest draft of the Main Street Cleanup Project RFP. City staff is working with PACE Engineering and legal counsel to verify the applicable provisions and ensure the final bid documents meet all legal and technical requirements.
The City’s goal is to complete the verification process and publish the RFP by the end of this week. That timeline remains subject to final legal and technical review.
Election Time!!!
The nomination period is now open for anyone interested in running for the Weed City Council, with three seats up for election. While the City Clerk is on vacation this week, Jayme and Christina have been authorized to issue nomination packets and assist prospective candidates. Interested residents may contact either of them at City Hall this week; the City Clerk will resume handling nomination packets upon returning Monday.
Expanded Social Media and Community Outreach
The City of Weed has expanded its online outreach to make it easier for residents to receive timely information and participate in community conversations.
In addition to the City’s website and Facebook page, the City has launched an official presence on Nextdoor. Residents can use these platforms to find City updates, meeting information, public notices, community events, alerts, polls, and opportunities to provide feedback.
The City’s social media pages are not continuously monitored and should not be used to report emergencies, service requests, code violations, or other matters requiring a direct response. For assistance, please get in touch with City Hall at (530) 938-5020.
Respectfully,
Dr. Dustin Stambaugh
City Manager
